About this release. Money Jungle - Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Max Roach. Not in a mood to simply rework older compositions, the bulk of the LP focused on music he wrote specifically for the session. It was recorded on September 17, 1962, and released in February 1963 by United Artists Jazz. Money Jungle is a thunderous opener, a blues that might be classified somewhere between post-bop and avant-garde. Ships from and sold by . О себе: Money Jungle - Duke Ellington, Charlie Jungle catches the trio at the zenith of each their individual prowess. Expectations for melodrama were well-founded. Roach's sticks dance and prance across every inch of his kit on A Little Max on Caravan he effectively shifts from exotic rhythms to straight time. The two notoriously tempestuous players coming into the studio with Ellington immediately created an air of infamy around the sessions. This track is a bit chaotic, with Mingus way too loud and Duke slamming the piano, and its also one of those tracks where Duke doesnt seem to totally fit with the world of Mingus and Roach. Things came to a head while recording the title track, you can hear the aggressive frustration, and for some reason this is the track that leads off the album. Ellington had previousl. Roach was in the middle of a hot hand, having just released the fiery protest album We Insist, and Mingus was a mere year away from penning The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, an architectural masterpiece that would see him meld bebop with classical and ballet patterns, as well as skeletal avant-garde hard lines. The Complete Money Jungle Sessions - Duke Ellington with Max Roach and Charles Mingus. Apparently this was a fairly stormy session with Mingus walking out at one point, due to frustration with Max, only to return when Duke persuaded him to return. This record introduced me to one of the most important musicians of the 20th century, no mean claim, but we are talking about Duke Ellington. He made stunning music in 1929 and was still a breathtaking pianist cum composer cum bandleader in 1974: Afro Eurasian Eclipse.I approached the record with a healthy dose of scepticism, because I assumed Ellington made music for dentists too distinguished to listen to Traditional Jazz. But on the other hand there are two giants on this record, Max Roach and Charles Mingus, so there had to be something about it. And this is excellent. It escapes my knowledge if any of them ever condescended to work with each other again on another occasion. But give yourself over to the beauty to Ellington's world with this one and then you have a life time achievement to discover. I know, I have hardly written anything about the music. It is a good and healthy dose of hard bop, stuff, you would somehow expect from Mingus and Roach, but funnily not from Ellington who composed every single number. Maybe you like Thelonious Monk or you are even familiar with the stunning trios fronted by Herbie Nichols, then take a deep breath and dive into the music of Duke Ellington, honestly Roach and Mingus were no idiots: Ellington will always be slightly more significant than a complete genre like Italo Disco or House or Burial or Scott Walker. Period.
Duke Ellington more significant than House?I respectfully disagree.
